GLP-1 Therapy
GLP-1 Therapy is a FDA-approved weight loss medication. The medications are administered once weekly via subcutaneous injection and produces real results.
These medications do 3 primary things to help aid with weight loss:
-
Triggers the pancreas to release insulin when blood sugar increases
-
Reduces appetite by slowing the emptying of the stomach by working on the lining of the stomach. This in turns sends a signal of fullness to the brain. This helps you eat less which results in weight loss.
-
Prevents the liver from producing excess glucose.
Semaglutide (active ingredient in Wegovy and Ozempic)
Semaglutide increases insulin secretion, which is beneficial for diabetics. Although at higher doses, it acts on centers in the brain and suppresses appetite helping patients adhere to a significantly reduced calorie diet.
The semaglutide prescribed is combined with cyanocobalamin (Vitamin B12). Vitamin B12 is a nutrient that helps with the proper functioning of nerve tissue, brain function and red blood cell production. It is also essential for a healthy metabolism. When used for weight loss they can boost metabolism and energy.
Tirzepatide (active ingredient in Mounjaro and Zepbound)
Tirzepatide works much like Semaglutide, but it contains an additional mechanism of GIP agonist. This means it mimics 2 different hormones in the body. GIP may work with GLP-1 to decrease appetite and increase energy expenditure, resulting in improved weight loss and reductions in blood sugar or cholesterol. Incretin hormones (such as GLP-1 and GIP) are released when food is consumed. They can help provide a feeling of fullness. They also boost insulin production in the pancreas and suppress glucagon production to improve blood sugar.
